Billingsmoor Farm, Butterleigh,
Devon.
Part of the Duchy Estate.
Billingsmoor Farm in Butterleigh is a traditional organic dairy
farm and is part of the the Bradninch Estate, which forms part of the
Prince of Wales Duchy of Cornwall Estate. The Duchy of Cornwall and Prince
Charles are well known for supporting both farming and the conservation
of the countryside. The Duchy Estate was created in 1337 by Edward
III for his son and heir, Prince Edward, and its primary function was
to provide him and the future Princes of Wales with an income from its
assets. A charter ruled that each future Duke of Cornwall would be the
eldest surviving son of the Monarch and the heir to the throne. The current
Duke of Cornwall, HRH The Prince of Wales, is actively involved in running
the Duchy and his philosophy is to improve the estate and pass it on
to future Dukes in a stronger and better condition.
The
Farm and Surroundings
Exmoor
has 34 miles of coastline including the highest cliffs in
England reaching a height of 1,350 feet at Culbone Hill,
however, the crest of this coastal ridge of hills is more than a
mile from the sea. If a cliff is defined as having a slope greater
than 60 degrees, the highest cliff on mainland Britain is Great Hangman
near Combe Martin at 1,043 feet high with a cliff face of
800 feet.
Exmoor's woodlands sometimes reach the shoreline, especially between
Porlock and The Foreland, where they form the single longest stretch
of coastal woodland in England and Wales. The Exmoor Coastal Heaths
have been recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to
the diversity of plant species present.
The scenery of rocky headlands, ravines, waterfalls and towering cliffs
gained the Exmoor coast recognition as a Heritage Coast in 1991.
This dramatic coastline is an adventure playground for climbers and explorers,
with its with huge waterfalls and caves. The cliffs provide one of the
longest and most isolated seacliff traverses in the UK
The Farming at Billingsmoor Farm.
This organic dairy farm keeps 140 British Friesian cows on 320
acres of organice grass and woodland. They run a year roundbreeding
programme and there are always new born calves on the farm. On Billingsmoor
they also grow crops that are harvested and fed to the cows during the
winter months.

Something Special in the
area.
The Beast of Exmoor is a cryptozoological cat that is
reported to roam Exmoor. Although there have been numerous eye witness sightings,
many scientists believe it to be purely mythical. Sightings were first reported
in the 1970s, although it became notorious in 1983, when a South Molton farmer
claimed to have lost over 100 sheep in the space of three months, all of them
apparently killed by violent throat injuries. It is reported as being between
4 feet and 8 feet from nose to tail. Descriptions of its colouration
range from black to tan or dark grey. It is possibly a Cougar or Black Leopard
which was released sometime in the 1960s or 1970s after a law was passed making
it illegal for them to be kept incaptivity outside zoos. However, considering
that Cougar and Leopard life spans are 12–15 years, this is unlikely.
In 2006 the British Big Cats Society reported that a skull found by a Devon farmer
was that of a Puma, however the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
states that "Based on the evidence, Defra does not believe that there are
big cats living in the wild in England." But don't worry on Billingsmoor
Farm our most preferred "beast" are our new born calves,
